Registration
Physiotherapists who are registered to practice in New Zealand are legally
required to hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) issued
by the Board under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003
in order to practise.
Australian Qualified Physiotherapists
Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition. (TTMR)
In August 1997 the New Zealand Parliament enacted the Trans-Tasman Mutual
Recognition Act recognizing the regulatory standards adopted in Australia
regarding goods and occupations.
If you currently hold full registration and are entitled to practice physiotherapy
in any Australian state or territory you are entitled to seek registration
in New Zealand under TTMR. That is you must be able to physically carry
out your occupation in Australia at the time of submitting an application
for registration in New Zealand (You will be required to supply evidence
of your entitlement to practice including, where applicable, evidence
of holding professional indemnity/liability insurance, with your application.)
Trans-Tasman Mutual recognition therefore provides an alternative avenue
for obtaining registration in New Zealand. Applicants have the choice
of applying for registration under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition
Act 1997 or under HPCA Act 2003.
Application Process
- Download the application form
- Send your completed application (and correctly certified copies of
the required evidence - www.physioboard.org.nz/certified_copies.asp
) and fee (NZ $180.00) to the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand. Annual
Practising Certificate (APC) fee can also be paid at this time.
If you wish to apply for an APC at this stage please include the prescribed
fee of NZ $333.00 in addition to the TTMR application fee.
- The Board makes inquiries of the registration authorities of any Australian
jurisdictions in which you are registered regarding your activities
in physiotherapy and any matters relevant to your written notice.
- The Physiotherapy Board will make a decision to grant, postpone or
decline registration within one month of receiving a completed application.
You will be notified in writing of the Board’s decision. Once
you have been issued with an APC you will be entitled to begin practising
physiotherapy in New Zealand.
For further information about this process please contact
the Secretariat.
