Normally, for security reasons the Board will not provide a replacement APC but in special circumstances a duplicate may be issued. There is a fee for issuing a duplicate APC. Please contact the Secretariat.

What do I do if I have changed my name?

Your APC is issued in the name as entered in the Register. The name you are practising under must be the name in which the APC is issued. The Board can not alter your name in the Register without formal evidence of a legal name change (such as a correctly certified copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll). For more information on changing your name with the Board click here.

What happens if I apply for an APC after 1 April?

If you apply for an APC any time after the 1 April the date of issue will be entered on to the certificate. You can not legally practice if you do not have a current APC.

I am employed solely as an auditor therefore I do not practice physiotherapy in a clinical context. Do I need to hold an APC?

The practice of physiotherapy goes far wider than clinical practice (i.e. hands-on). Physiotherapists employed in a variety of roles must hold an APC if those roles influence clinical practice and public safety.

If the position you are employed in requires that you are health professional then you need a current APC.

If you use your physiotherapy knowledge in your employment then you require an APC.

I only work five hours a week - can I get a reduction in my APC fee?

There is no reduction in APC fee for those that work fewer hours. The cost of administering APCs remain the same regardless of whether the physiotherapist is working full time or in a part-time capacity.

Can I claim a refund?

The Board is not able to refund APC fees if a physiotherapist decides to become non-practising during the year.

I am unclear about registration and the renewing of my status. Do I need to get registered every year?

No you don't. In New Zealand you are usually registered once only. Your name remains in the register and you are required to update your practising status annually - whether you are in NZ or overseas at the time. If you wish to practice as a physiotherapist in New Zealand you are required to hold an APC which you apply for annually.

Can I fax my payment details or phone you with my credit card details?

No, the complete APC form (the Practising Status Form) must be returned to the Secretariat. The form has particular questions that only you can answer and you have to make a declaration regarding your CPD activities and your competence to practice. If you return only the payment section of the form or you fail to complete the form you will not be issued an APC which will mean delays. Incomplete applications are returned for correction.

What happens if I do not receive my APC renewal form in time for 1 April?

Firstly, contact the Board.

Legally you must ensure the Board holds your current postal, residential and (where applicable) your work address. The most common reason for not receiving the Practising Status form is because the Board does not have your latest address information. If you have not received the Practising Status form by the end of February you should contact the Secretariat. You will be required to update your address information by downloading and completing the change of address form then faxing or mailing it to the Board.

My colleagues and I want to put our applications in together, with one cheque to cover our fees.

The Board does not accept bulk payments.

If (and it has happened) one of the physiotherapists has not signed the declaration in their form, for example, then they could hold up the progress of everyone elses applications. Similarly, if a physiotherapist has answered yes to the competence and fitness to practise questions there may be delays due to the issues involved and/or they may not have supplied sufficient evidence etc. They would be holding up everyone else's application.

Can my parents or Power of Authority complete my APC renewal form?

No, you must complete the form. Before the Board is able to issue you with an APC it must be assured of your competence and fitness to practise therefore you must provide information pertaining to these issues including a signed self-declaration that, among other requirements:

  • you believe you are competent to practise within your scope of practise; and
  • you have completed the minimum number of continuing professional development (CPD) hours required to meet the recertification requirements; and
  • you can supply supporting documentation if required.

I have not received my APC certificate although I have completed the form with the fee. My employer wants to see my APC certificate. What can I do?

It is very good practise that your employer is asking to sight your APC.

Check the publicly available register online click here to confirm your practising status. If your name is not listed the Board may not have received your application, or it is incomplete and we have returned it to you. Phone the Board to check – remember to have your registration number handy.
